Actions to strengthen public transportation systems can reduce GHG emissions through reducing car use and traffic. Development of bike lanes and walking trails also encourages safe, zero-emission transportation.

Community programs can provide spaces for inter-generational socialization, creativity and discussion. Community services provide supports in the face of income and other social inequities. Collectively, these actions are integral to enhancing community capacity for climate adaptation.

• More green spaces and other social recreational spaces where community members can recharge and connect.
• Preserve and maintain the quality of green spaces, streams, waters, parks and walking trails in the neighbourhood.
• Importance of nature for mental and physical health.
• Appropriate infrastructure and supports in parks.

Planting trees reduces carbon in the atmosphere, provides shade, cools temperatures, and creates a habitat for animals and organisms.

• Fostering a strong sense of community among residents.
• Activities that promote community connection and friendship.

Climate actions, when carried out collectively, can foster community bonds. Examples include community gardens, farmers’ markets, educational activities, and social and environmental activism. These activities, in addition to non-climate related spaces that foster community connections, also serve to enhance capacity for climate adaptation.
